The Kinematic Sequence: Golf’s Ground-Up Power Chain

Watch any long hitter in slow motion and the same order appears: the hips fire first, the torso follows, the arms next, the club last — each segment peaking faster than the one before, like the tip of a whip. That order is the kinematic sequence, and it is how efficient swings multiply modest body speed into serious clubhead speed.
The chain, segment by segment
From the top: the lead hip clears while the back still faces the target; the torso accelerates against the decelerating hips; the arms sling off the decelerating torso; and the club releases off the arms at the bottom. Energy passes up the chain at each hand-off — a segment firing early breaks the whip and the energy dies there.
The classic amateur break is "arms first": casting from the top, which spends the club’s speed before the ball and shows up as lost distance plus a steep, out-of-order look.
How it is measured
True sequence analysis needs 3D — you are comparing rotational timing of the pelvis, thorax and arms in space. Training the ground-up start
- Step-change drill: hit balls stepping the lead foot toward the target as you finish the backswing — the step forces the lower body to start.
- Pump drill: from the top, pump the hands down to hip height twice while the hips open, then swing through on the third.
- Feel: "start the downswing from the ground" — lead hip clears before the arms even think about it.
Pair it with tempo
Sequence and tempo are cousins: a rushed transition almost always breaks the order. If your tempo ratio reads low (quick from the top) and your sequence reads out of order, fix the tempo first — the sequence often falls into place behind it.
