X-Factor in Golf: Shoulder–Hip Separation and Power

When coaches talk about "coil", they mean X-factor: the difference between how far your shoulders have turned and how far your hips have turned at the top of the backswing. That separation stretches the big muscles of the torso like a rubber band, and releasing it in the right order is where effortless-looking distance comes from.

What the number means

If your shoulders turn 95° and your hips 45°, your X-factor is 50°. Measured on tour players in 3D, typical values sit in the mid-40s to mid-60s. More separation is generally linked with more clubhead speed — but only when it is well-timed, which is why X-factor is best read alongside your kinematic sequence rather than chased on its own.

Because it involves rotation in depth, X-factor cannot be measured honestly from a flat 2D video. AnchorStance computes it from the full 3D reconstruction of your body (a Premium metric) and grades it against a 25–68° ideal band.

The two ways golfers lose coil

  • Hips over-turning with the shoulders: everything turns together, nothing stretches. Often caused by a trail leg that gives up its flex.
  • All arms, no body: the arms lift while the torso barely turns — a "long backswing" with a tiny X-factor.

Building usable separation

The feel: your back turns to the target while your belt buckle stays quieter. Keep some flex in the trail knee to resist with the lower body. Try slow rehearsals where you deliberately stop the hips at "half" while the shoulders keep going — then check the number on your next analyzed swing rather than trusting the feel.

A word of caution: forcing extreme separation with a stiff lower back trades power for injury risk. Build the number gradually and let mobility work come along with it.
